Colorful Festivity
Every year, Davao City celebrates the Kadayawan Festival. A festival once dubbed as 'Mother of All Philippine Festivals." A yearly celebration for the city's bountiful harvests, from flowers, to fruits, vegetables, and even ornamental plants. The week-long festivity happens every third week of August.
The Kadayawan Festival speaks of the beauty, and the diverse culture and tradition of the Dabawenyos (or the people of Davao). Davao City is home to at least 10 major indigenous tribes in the country. These ethnic tribes, or the "Lumads", like the Bagobos, Manobos, Mandayas, Mansakas,Matigsalogs, Tbolis, to name a few, lived together in peace and harmony and friendship. Kadayawan spreads the message of racial harmony.
The Kadayawan Festival features:
* Agro Industrial Fair
*Floral exhibits
*Nightly street party
*Floral Float Parade And Competition (usually happen during the culmination of the celebration)
*Fluvial Parade (to welcome the different leaders of the Lumads.
*Selection of the Kadayawan Queen. The candidates are representatives of their own tribes. They will showcase their beauties, talents, and intelligence, wearing their native costumes (but with a modern touch, and designed by our local fashion designers.)
*The Converging Of Indigenous Tribes at the People's Park, playing indigenous beats and rhythms with gongs and native instruments.
*Street Dancing Parade and Competition also called "Indak indak sa Kadalanan".Aside from school children, university students, local government organizations, there are also contingents coming from the other parts of Mindanao.

Waling waling (Vanda Sanderiana) is the Queen of Philippine Orchids. My Davao City is the proud home of this exotic beauty. It normally blooms only once a year between July and October, but a new study said that waling waling, now, at any time of the year can bear flowers if grown in specific sea level elevation or when raised at high altitude. We see waling waling in its grandeur during the Kadayawan Festival.

Best Festivity

Every third week month of August
Davao City was in a war
Of dancing, singing in utmost
That reaches the endless a far.
Davaoenos must be joyful
And set aside first the hurdles
Until the end of next night fall
In this big city that cuddles.
Davaoenos was rejoicing
On the heat of tearing sun
Like a cage less eagle flying
And waling-waling hang upon.
You will saw the people smiling
While mothers finding their children
And pick-picketers was scanning
Of the police that are concern.
This day was camaraderie
Of settled religions and tribes
In this blessed spot for the free
Where is in the island that cries.
I hope that you can visit here
And fell the best festivity
In the nation that they are, fear
Of wisdom, faith and sanctity.
Great hub Alta. I took a lot of photos of the 2011 Kadayawan Festival and posted 2 hubs on this topic so far. It will be interesting to see what you have put together on this "Festival of Festivals" celebrated by our beloved city.
Thanks Alta. I was lucky to be in Davao during this year's Kadayawan Celebration. My photo collection just ballooned three-fold because of the exciting events goings on. I love our city!
